What I
got
by peter flynn
What I got is a song about what it really means to be rich, and how we can reach our potential in this life.
I look at
you
You look at me
You've got that air
You're just like a Queen
But
I've heard,
I've heard it said
That you're no better
You're just a "ruined maid"
And
it seems It seems to me
That you are living
Living living like Hardy
So I want
you to reach to He
And be all you have the potential to be
Riches were never bought you see
and me........I've got no money
I look at
you
You look at me
You're eyes are so heavy
It must be curiosity
But I've
heard
I've heard it said
That you've got
Old ideas stuck in your head
And it seems
It seems to me
That you are living
On the wrong side of the sea
So I want
you to reach to He
And be all you have the potential to be
Riches were never bought you see
and me........I've got no money
This was not written to or about anyone in particular but instead loosely based on a Thomas Hardy poem called "The Ruined Maid." I got the song title from a Sublime song (brilliant band, check them out if you don't know them) also entitled "What I Got."
In the song I only mention what I don't have, but the Sublime song finishes this song by telling what I do have (check out the song for yourself to see........... its all a puzzle!)
The Hardy poem is about a woman who marries for money and then meets a friend and the friend begins to speak with her. I imagined myself as the friend in the conversation when they meet: "I look at you, you look at me, you've got that air you look like a queen. But I've heard it said that you're no better you're just a ruined maid."
The lady is so unhappy because she has sold out, basically prostituted herself, for money and now she has found that the money gives her little satisfaction. And it seems it seems to me that you are living, living like Hardy. Thomas Hardy himself was a rich and exceedingly unhappy man who died a cynic.
And I want you to reach to He, I want my friend to reach to God, to be all you have the potential to be, because only through God's plan can you truly reach your full potential, riches where never bought you see, being rich is not equal to having a lot of money its about something more than that, And me, I've got no money.
I look at you, you look at me, your eyes are so heavy it must be curiosity, my friend is curious and can not understand how I can be happy without any money, but I've heard I've heard it said that you have old ideas stuck in your head, the old idea that money will bring happiness.
And it seems it seems to me that you are living on the wrong side of the sea........ Moses crossing the Red Sea in the old testament symbolises being born again in Christ, moving from the old life of slavery (in bondage to evil masters like in Egypt) into a new life of freedom following the Spirit of God.
My friend is on the wrong side of the sea because she is still a slave to her desires. "And so I want You to reach to He to be all you have the potential to be, riches were never bought you see and me, I've got no money."
